SUSTAINABILITY
An important goal of Mayab Center is to respect, protect and educate about the ecosystems of this area - especially those threatened systems within the Sian Ka'an biosphere. To offer our guests access to this protected area, we have created a model of sustainable tourism; all aspects of the Center operations are low-impact.
We have built a small center which houses up to 15 people with minimal impact on the environment. Our PALAPA-YURTS were hand built on decks above the sand, and are removable structures with no permanent impact on the soil or plants.
Guests use a shared bathhouse where all grey water is filtered and recycled through plant beds so that no polluted water seeps into the ground. Our state of the art black water composting septic system turns all waste materials into organic matter to avoid any further pollution of the local groundwater or degradation of the coral reef system.
We are building a solar generated power system, we compost food scraps, we recycle, and we are starting our own organic garden to help reduce commercial dependency.
